Employee Networks

Since 1987, Employee Networks at American Express have brought together people with shared backgrounds and interests to engage with and learn from each other. Formed by our employees and sponsored by senior business leaders, our Employee Networks reflect and encompass the full spectrum of diversity.

Making a difference to our community:

Our PRIDE network participates in the Pride Parade in downtown Salt Lake City, officially the largest parade in the state. PRIDE members distribute Shop Small® bags to support local businesses, and Human Rights Campaign palm cards promoting American Express’ 100% rating on the Corporate Equality index.

Making a difference to our careers:

Our Hispanic Origin & Latin American Network (HOLA) frequently hosts career development sessions in partnership with the National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA), an organization that empowers Hispanic business professionals to achieve their full educational, economic and social potential.

Making a difference to our company:

The Black Employee Network (BEN) and Hispanic Origin & Latin American Network (HOLA) have partnered with product management teams to help develop financial inclusion solutions and products, such as American Express Serve® and Bluebird®.

Women At American Express

We are proud of our gender-balanced organization, and actively promote the advancement of women at American Express. Externally, we support groundbreaking research for women’s career development, and internally, we ensure that our female employees are given the tools, resources, and sponsorship they need to succeed.

In 2010, we launched the Women In the Pipeline and at the Top (WIPAT) initiative to create opportunities for women. To help women advance to the highest levels of the company, we used a three-part approach: corporate gender intelligence training, pathways to sponsorship (sponsorship training to foster career advancement and retention) and a focus on building an American Express global women’s community.

Most recently, the WIPAT program evolved to Women Rising at American Express, which continues to support our goals by expanding on our core pillars of strengthening our female talent pipeline, advancing women and continuing to build a strong global network.

Supporting the LGBT Community

American Express has long been committed to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) causes. As a result of this dedication, we have scored 100% on the Human Rights Campaign’s (HRC) Corporate Equality Index since 2004.

Unconscious Bias: An Important Leadership Initiative

In 2015, American Express introduced new training on how to mitigate unconscious bias. This program aims to help employees identify and break unconscious bias in key decisions relating to both people and business decisions. Through this self-paced program, employees learn how to recognize the types of bias that may be influencing their decisions and put in place processes to mitigate that bias.

As a part of our strategy, we remain globally focused on diversity and inclusion, while recognizing the local nuances in the key markets where we operate.

Executive Black Employee Network (BEN) Global Forum

The Exec BEN Global Forum is a two-day experience which brings together our vice president and above black leaders to provide development resources and increase their exposure and networking opportunities. In May 2017, American Express hosted its fourth Exec BEN Global Forum. The Forum continues to challenge this community of black leaders at American Express to also develop the future leaders of the company, and to take ownership of their individual success.

Reach Out Helps Promising Women Advance

American Express was the primary sponsor of Reach Out, a first-of-its-kind, 10-month program launched in India to provide women leaders from 5 top Indian companies with the skills, contacts and inspiration they need to reach the highest levels of their organization.

Participants attended online and in-person events, forums, and learning circles, with both peers and senior leaders. Each of the participating companies hosted a group workshop focusing on a specific topic, such as the need for executive sponsorship of women leaders.

Local Women's conferences: Mexico and India

Motivated by the success of our Global Women’s Conferences, we hosted targeted, regional Women’s Conferences in Mexico and India to reach more junior women around the company. Local conferences are opportunities for networking and exposure to senior leadership. Events focus on career progression guidance, developing resiliency, being an effective protégé, and building the leadership behaviors and mindset to advance at American Express.

Spotlight on Women

To reach even more women globally, we delivered new programming in 2014. Spotlight on Women is a series of events designed to reach a broader audience of women across the company and provide opportunities to engage multiple times a year. The Spotlight on Women program helps foster a stronger community by giving all women the opportunity to experience, learn, and network together. In 2015, we continued the momentum with an event hosted in our London office, where our research partners shared insights from our sponsored research on the topic of Women and Power. The event was recorded and is accessible to all employees globally.
