Your American Express® Card may include complimentary domestic and international Travel Insurance, as well as retail insurances like Card Refund and Purchase Cover, and/or Smartphone Screen Cover.

Domestic Travel
Cover may be provided:
- If you need to amend or cancel your trip because you or your travelling companion, close relative or a person you’re visiting for the main purpose of your trip are diagnosed with COVID-19.
Cover is not provided for:
- Cancellation or trip changes due to border closures or travel advisory warnings related to COVID-19; or
- Medical expenses related to COVID-19.
International Travel
Cover may be provided:
- If you need to amend or cancel your trip because you or your travelling companion, close relative or a person you’re visiting for the main purpose of your trip are diagnosed with COVID-19.
- If you need to amend or cancel your trip as a result of border closures or upgraded travel advisory warnings related to COVID-19 that occur after you have booked your trip.
- For medical expenses you incur if you’re diagnosed with COVID-19 during your trip.
Cover is not provided if:
- The country you’re travelling to is subject to a Government 'Do Not Travel' warning or if borders are closed before your trip starts – even if you have an exemption to travel from the Australian government. However, if you need to amend or cancel your trip due to such a situation, the costs of cancellation and amendment are covered if the warning or border closure occurred after you booked and met the eligibility criteria.
Benefit Exclusions
Claims arising from or caused by COVID-19 will not be paid if:
- You're travelling against a treating doctor's advice.
- You travel after the Australian government has issued a ‘Do Not Travel’ warning or despite borders being closed, even if you have received an exemption from the Australian government to travel.
- You receive a refund, credit note or voucher for the amounts you’re claiming (for example, if an airline or hotel provide you with a credit refund).

If your Card has retail insurances - your eligible items are covered when you purchase them using your American Express® Card and/or Membership Rewards® Points.
Cover only applies to Australian residents. Other Terms, conditions and exclusions apply (such as cover limits, waiting periods and excesses).

Travel Insurance and FAQs
Travel insurance is included with many American Express Cards.
If you have an active American Express Card Account and use it to pay for your trip – and meet the eligibility criteria – you’ll be covered under the Complimentary American Express Travel Insurance.

- Anyone aged 80 or over at the time making the qualifying travel purchase

You are eligible if:
- You’re an Australian resident
- You’re 79 or younger when you make your qualifying travel purchase using your American Express Card
- Your American Express Card Account is active when you book your travel and when you make a claim

To be covered, your purchase must meet these criteria:
For international return trips
- You’ve paid at least the full amount of the outbound portion of your return flight or cruise using your American Express Card (or its corresponding reward points)
For domestic return trips
- You’ve paid $500 or more on accommodation, or
- You’ve paid for the full amount of the outbound portion of your return flight, cruise, bus or train using your American Express Card (or its corresponding reward points)
Note: American Express Platinum Business Cards do not need to make a qualifying travel purchase (pay for travel purchases) using the Card.
Yes. To be covered, you must use your American Express Card to pay for a qualifying travel purchase. Your Card Account must also be active when you make the booking and when you submit your claim.
What if I only paid for part of my Trip with my Amex Card ?
You're still covered as long as:
- For international travel, you’ve paid the full amount of the outbound ticket of your return flight or cruise
- For domestic travel, you’ve either paid the full amount of the outbound ticket cost of your return flight, cruise, bus or train or spent $500+ on accommodation using your Amex Card.
No. Your cover is automatically activated when you make a qualifying travel purchase using your American Express Card and meet the other eligibility criteria.
- For Consumer Cards, the Card Member and any Additional Card Members connected to the Card Member’s Account and their spouse and/or dependent children
- For Business Cards, the Card Member and any Employee Card Members connected to the Card Member’s Account and their spouse and/or dependent children
- For Corporate Cards, the Card Member and their spouse and/or dependent children

The following is a summary of the complimentary American Express travel insurance benefits. Coverage and exclusions may vary depending on your Card. Some of the things we don’t cover are listed below but they are not exhaustive, so always check your full policy terms and conditions located in the “Insurance included with your Card” section below for details specific to your Card.
Limits, sub-limits, terms, conditions and exclusions apply. Some of the exclusions are any claim resulting from a pre-existing medical condition or for any claim relating to a person 80 years or over (at the time the qualifying travel purchase was made). Refer to the Terms and Conditions specific to your Card for more information which can be located in the “Insurance included with your Card” section below.
Overseas Medical Emergency Expenses
Covers emergency medical expenses if you or your spouse/children need emergency medical care for an injury or illness (including COVID-19) while overseas.
Not covered:
- Costs relating to a pre-existing medical condition (including any repeat prescription costs)
- Travelling for any medical purposes
- Medical expenses incurred in Australia
Trip Cancellation or Changes
Covers non-refundable and unused trip costs if you cancel or change your trip due to specified events like illness or injury including that of a close relative or travelling companion, or natural disaster.
Not covered:
- Cancellation or amendment due to airline schedule issues, except for:
- Mechanical breakdown of your transport
- Riot, strike or civil commotion
- Bad weather
- Natural disaster
- Cancellation or amendment due to a pre-existing medical condition
- Cancellation or amendment due to any event not listed in the policy
- Cancellation due injury, illness or death of a close relative who’s not an Australian resident
- Costs where a refund, credit note, or voucher has been received or offered for those costs
Travel Inconvenience
Cover for additional costs incurred if your scheduled flight is cancelled or delayed by 4 hours or more, or your baggage is delayed by 6 hours or more at the scheduled destination point.
Not covered:
- Additional transport expenses unless the delay results in you being unable to arrive in time for a special event
- Baggage delays on return flights home
- Purchase of clothing or toiletries that are not reasonably necessary for your trip
Resumption of Long International Trip
If you return to Australia mid-trip due to the death, injury or unforeseen illness of a close relative, you may be covered to resume your trip.
Not covered:
- If the close relative was over 91 or had a terminal illness when you booked your travel
Lost or Damaged Personal Baggage, Valuables, Money and Travel Documents
Covers damage, loss, or theft of belongings or travel documents during your trip.
Not covered:
- Items not reported to authorities (insufficient evidence)
- Valuables or money in checked-in luggage
- Items left unattended in a public place, unless due to an emergency medical, security or evacuation situation
Loss Damage Waiver
Covers your liability if your rental vehicle is stolen or accidentally damaged.
Not covered:
- Damage to other vehicles
- Rentals longer than 31 days
Note: cover will vary depending on whether you have purchased insurance (or waiver cover) for loss or damage to a rental vehicle from the rental company.
Personal Accident / Public Transport Accident
Cover if you're permanently disabled or die due to an accident on your trip.
Personal Liability
Covers your liability if you accidentally damage someone’s property or cause them injury on your trip.
Not covered:
- Damage caused by a vehicle
- Damage caused intentionally
Card Account Balance Waiver
Covers your American Express Card Balance if you claim under Personal Accident Cover / Public Transport Accident Cover
Not covered:
- Any balance overdue for payment by more than 90 days at the time of the accident

There are exclusions specific to each cover type as well as general exclusions that apply to all cover sections. Some of the general exclusions include, but are not limited to:
- Travelling while not an Australian resident
- Trips that don’t start and end in Australia
- Financial collapse (insolvency) of travel providers, including airline, travel agent, and accommodation provider
- Some sports or high-risk activities (see below for list of excluded sports and activities)
- Claims related to war or terrorism

- ski-stunting
- speed, performance or endurance tests
- steeple chasing
- tour operator safari (where You or any tourist will be carrying guns)
- trekking requiring climbing equipment and/or ascending above 3,000 metres from sea level
- war games/paint ball
- white water rafting
- yachting more than 20 nautical miles from the nearest coastline.

Yes – except for ski jumping, ski racing, ski stunting, heli-skiing and ice-hockey.
Yes, if:
- You’re licensed to ride a motorcycle in both Australia and the country you’re visiting
- You’re wearing a helmet (including any passengers)
- You’re not racing
Any medical, dental, or physical condition you had before booking your trip. Different exclusions may apply based on how recently the condition occurred—check your policy terms and conditions or details relating to your Card.
Possibly—but we can’t guarantee the level of cover offered by this travel insurance meets all visa requirements. Check your policy Terms and Conditions for full details and compare it to the requirements outlined by the visa authority you are applying to.
You can download a Confirmation of Insurance Benefit letter here but it only contains your name as an insured traveller and may not be accepted by all authorities.

What is the excess on claims?
Some claims have an excess. Check your Card’s Schedule of Benefits in the Insurance Terms and Conditions relating to your Card.
What documents do I need to file a claim?
All claims require you to provide proof you paid for your trip using your American Express Card.

Depending on the type of claim you’re raising, you may need to provide the following documents to support your claim:
Trip delays, cancellation or curtailment
- Confirmation letter from carrier with date, cause, and duration of delay
- Medical certificate for cancellations due to illness or injury
Baggage loss, theft, damage or delay
- Police or incident report(s)
- Receipts for lost, stolen, or damaged items (if you don’t have receipts, the amount covered may be lower)
- Replacement quotes (if applicable)
- Repair quote(s)
- Baggage receipt/delivery confirmation
Loss and theft of travel documents
- Incident report/receipt from embassy, consulate, or relevant authority
- Police or incident report(s)
Medical expenses
- Medical certificate(s) and receipts
- Proof of emergency expenses (if applicable)
Rental Vehicle Excess
- Copy of rental agreement
- Photo of driving licence
- Card statement with final rental company charges
- Written correspondence with rental company
- Final invoice from rental company
- Police report if applicable
- Details of other parties
How do I check my claim status?
American Express doesn't have access to your claim and can't confirm your eligibility for cover, so you’ll need to contact Chubb directly to check the progress on an existing claim.

As long as you made your qualifying travel purchase using your American Express Card, and you have an American Express Card with insurance benefits at the time you suffer a loss, you may be eligible for cover. If the American Express Card you used for your trip purchase is different to the American Express Card you are using at the time of a claim, we will assess your claim under the Card you were on at the date of loss giving rise to a claim.

Get your Confirmation of Insurance Benefit Letter
If you are a Card Member who has a Card with Complimentary Travel Insurance and need written confirmation that your American Express® Card includes insurance benefits for border entry purposes, CHUBB Insurance can provide a letter confirming the travel insurance benefit on your Card.
IMPORTANT: This letter is not confirmation that you or anyone else is covered by the policy. To be eligible for cover, you must meet all the eligibility requirements of the policy.
As with all insurance policies - cover is subject to terms, conditions and exclusions (such as maximum age limits, pre-existing medical conditions and cover limits). For more information on eligibility, see the ‘Your Card Insurance Explained’ section above.

Make a claim
In the event of a medical emergency
Should the unexpected occur whilst you’re travelling make sure you contact Chubb Assistance soon as practicable on +612 9335 3492. Chubb Assistance will ensure you receive fast and effective treatment from a doctor who speaks your language. Your claim may be affected should you not contact us as soon as practicable.
