How do I link an external account so that I am able to transfer funds in to or out of my account?

You will need to link your Personal Savings account to your external checking or savings account at another bank in order to transfer funds electronically. The linked external account must belong to you and have the same ownership as your Personal Savings account. Once you enter your external account credentials (your account and routing numbers), you will be sent test deposits in order to verify that account.

Test Deposits

Test deposits are two small credits that we send for security purposes to the external bank account you would like linked. These test deposits will be labeled AXP TEST, will be less than $0.99 each, and will not appear in your external bank account until 1-2 business days after you initiate the linkage. In order to successfully link the external account to your Personal Savings account, you will need to correctly verify these test deposits. (Please note: No American Express employees can see the amounts, and the only way that you can obtain the correct amounts is by accessing the external bank’s website or by calling them.)  Once you have obtained the correct amounts from your external bank, you can enter these test deposit amounts and link your accounts.

Complete the following steps to ensure your accounts are successfully linked:

  • Within 1-2 business days, look for two small deposits in your external bank account. They will be labeled AXP TEST.
  • Write down the two amounts (you will need to enter these exact amounts later).
  • After you have written down your test deposit amounts, log in to your account at personalsavings.americanexpress.com (or click the link in the email that will be sent you).
  • Click on the Transfers tab and then click View Pending Linked Accounts in the dropdown menu.
  • Select the corresponding Account Name and click Verify.

Mailing a Check

If you choose to link your external bank account by mail, please send the signed and dated External Account Linkage Form along with a live (not voided) personal check for deposit which meets the following criteria:

  • It is drawn on your personal account to be linked;
  • It shows your name on the check as an account owner;
  • It is made payable to American Express National Bank;
  • It includes your Personal Savings account number on the memo line of the check; and
  • It is dated and signed.

A minimum deposit of $.01 must be made to complete the account linkage process.

Mail the check with the signed and dated External Account Linkage Form to:

American Express National Bank
P.O. Box 30384
Salt Lake City, Utah 84130

Deposits made by check are accepted in our sole discretion. We reserve the right to refuse, return, or limit any deposit you make to your account. Examples of the types of items we do not accept for deposit include multiple-endorsed checks, counter checks, starter checks, travelers' checks, and money orders
